May 12, 2017

Although not everyone was happy to hear rain forecast this week and were grateful when it didn’t arrive, Team Fergmeijer was looking forward to the free carwash. This time of year our cars are almost constantly ‘dusty beige’ coloured.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Spring Wing Ding last weekend! The Park Centre was hoppin’ as dancers from a number of different decades strutted their stuff in a fundraiser for the Angel Bus.

Living in a small town, you would think we would know everyone’s birthdays, but some people are more private than others. Which means we need your help to embar… er… honour them here in the column! Drop us a line with a name and birthday to see your favourite people mentioned here.

The library continues to show pre-dvd release movies. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming show dates, titles and trailers. The next movie night will be Saturday (tomorrow) at 7pm. Bring the kids out to see the animated feature Ballerina (aka Leap!). And don’t forget that the library is also offering a variety of board games for all ages, available for playing in the library or checking out for a week of fun at home.

With the warmer weather on the horizon, the next sign of spring will be the arrival of the black flies. Perhaps that’s not something to celebrate, but that also heralds the arrival of the Black Fly Doubles Tennis Tournament on Saturday May 20 at the MSS courts! No partner necessary - contact Chris at 705 968 0404 for more information or to register.

The Economic Development Committee has launched it’s newest initiative, the Story Trail writing challenge! Submit your short story (500 words max) about Kagawong or Manitoulin for a chance to win a cash prize. In addition, submissions will be curated for display along the river trail as well as in shops around town. Submission date is May 30th. Check out the Story Trail page on Facebook, or contact Sharon (705-282-0193) or Diane (705-282-8346). Remember, being a writer is 3% talent, and 97% not getting distracted by the internet.

Celebrate Canada 150 with The Island Singers! Concerts featuring all-Canadian music will be Sunday, May 14 at 4pm at the United Church in Little Current, and Monday, May 15 at 7:30pm at the Mindemoya Missionary Church.

Manitoulin Secondary is hosting a Relay for Life event June 2-3. Teams of any size walk through the night to raise money that goes toward cancer research, prevention, and outreach. Check out http://relayforlife.ca/manitoulinss for information on registering a team or making a donation.

With summer swiftly approaching, there are more and more activities going on in town and in the surrounding areas. Stay tuned here and on the Kagawong Facebook page to stay up to date on all the happenings. Team Fergmeijer is quite looking forward to being legitimately busy. Usually we just walk around with a piece of paper and a clipboard to make it look like we’re busy.
