April 27, 2018

We’ve received some feedback about our very punny column last week. Not everyone was laughing. Some readers felt we have been a bit condescending. (That means talking down to people.) We’ll strive to do better in the future.

Green Living Expo was back last weekend and better than ever! With short SMASH talks on a variety of green-related topics, electric and hybrid cars galore and a variety of booths featuring eco-offerings from local businesses and artisans. Once again, the Recreation committee and the Go-Green Committee have hit it out of the park with their efforts.

We were extremely saddened to hear of Jan Bainbridge’s sudden passing this week. She will be missed.

We don’t seem to have any birthdays to announce this week, but if you have a friend or family member you would like to embarrass… uh… honour, with a mention in this column, send us a name and date via email.

Tomorrow! The Manitoulin Community Choir presents their spring concert on Saturday, April 28 at 7:30pm at the Kagawong Park Centre. Admission is $10, or $20 per family. Don’t miss it!

We at Team Fergmeijer used to think that the onion was the only food that could make us cry. But then one of us sat on a pineapple.

Drum roll please… we have Euchre results! There was a three-way tie for first place last week: Ken & Judy; Ted & Ruth; Sally & Bev. In fourth place was Sheila & Graham. Most Loners was Dave & Laureen and Ted & Ruth. Lil & Diane had the low score and Mike walked away with the door prize.

The Billings landfill has reverted back to their regular hours for the summer. Stop by to chat with Dennis and trade your trash for treasures at the Kagawong Mall - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4pm - 8pm, Saturdays from 10am - 6pm, or Sundays from 1pm - 6pm.

A quick heads up about the planned power outage on May 6th. Power will be out in the morning for several hours, so plan accordingly.

Our words of wisdom for this week: Nature abhors a vacuum, but not as much as a cat does.

April 20, 2018

Gentle reader, romaine calm, but there are a number of food puns coming your way. Gouda luck keeping a straight face. We’re quite eggcited to think that we might inspire a chuckle or two… we are, after all, quite the pear of writers (and, in Kagawong at least, we’re kind of a big dill). As we like to say, when it comes to puns, go fig or go home!

This is it: The Green Living Expo weekend! Tonight’s Mac ‘n’ Brew kicks off this fabulous weekend. Doors open at 5:30pm and supper starts at 6:15pm. $25 gets you a homemade mac ‘n’ cheese supper, a beer or a glass of wine, and a talk by a guest speaker. There may still be a ticket or two left, so contact a recreation committee member right now!

The Green Living Expo continues at the Park Centre tomorrow with a Show & Shine of several different electric and hybrid vehicles at noon, followed by a variety of booths and speakers on various Green topics. Lunch and snacks available - we hope to see you there!

How do we know spring has sprung? There’s lots of music in the air! Come out Thursday, April 26 to hear various combinations of all ages of music students from across the island perform, including a mass band performance. The concert starts at 7pm at Manitoulin Secondary School, and entry is by donation to the island schools’ music programs.

A very happy birthday to the sweetest Kagawongian - Jean W is turning 29 in a few days. Team Fergmeijer intends to have lunch with her at least one day this week to celebrate. We’ll even make her husband do the cooking!

This time last year we were announcing the start of smelt season. We haven’t heard any hints of them running, but we are also asleep most nights by 9, so we might just be missing them all.

Salami get this straight (because we are easily cornfused), there are people out there that don’t like puns? If it’s upsetting to you, drop us a line and we can taco ‘bout it. We don’t want to get jalapeno business, but if you feel you are totally feta up with our long, drawn out puns, we should hash it out. Seriously, we doughnut know what we would do without puns, but we recognize that they aren’t to everyone’s taste.

April 13, 2018

Happy Friday the 13th! Feeling a little spooked? Not us… Team Fergmeijer doesn’t really care that it’s Friday the 13th. We’re just happy it’s finally Friday! Plus, it’s unlucky to believe in superstitions. April 13th is also Blame Someone Else Day so whatever you think we did, it’s totally not our fault.

Need to get from point A to point B? Why not hop the new Manitoulin bus route? Circumnavigate the Island in comfort and get stuff done at the same time! We feel like the bus needs a nickname, so we throw it out to you, our loyal readers. Any ideas?

There’s a literally literary brand new business opening in Kagawong this spring! Keep an eye on the space beside Bridal Veil Variety this May!

Even though the ground is still snow-covered, we can all start planning our summer gardens! At this point, we're thinking chilly peppers, iceberg lettuce, brrrrrrroccoli, winter squash, kholdrabi, rhuburrrb, and parsnippy. We’re feeling hungry already! Have a great weekend!

April 6, 2018

Who needs April showers when you can have April snowballs? Seems everyone is feeling tired these days… perhaps it’s because they’ve just finished a long, 31 day March?

If you came by the Park Centre last Saturday, you might have caught of glimpse of the Easter Bunny hippity-hopping through the trees! The annual Kagawong Easter egg hunt was possibly the best one yet! At least 40 youngsters, along with their grownups, came out to seek and destroy a whopping number of hidden eggs. Thanks to the Rec Committee for organizing it, and to all the community members who came out to take part in it.

Happy birthday to Sharon A who, as of Sunday, has brightened up our year for the 29th year in a row!

Our heart-felt sympathies go out to the families and friends of Dave Montgomery who passed away last week. He will be missed by so many in the community.

There has been an overwhelming response to the Team Fergmeijer Sandhill Crane Challenge this year. Rumour has it an actual trophy might be in the works for next year! The first annual Team Fergmeijer Sandhill Cooing Contest brought out a small but dedicated group on April 1st. Marcel B from Maple Point, and L.Z. from Evansville (who prefers to remain anonymous) both made solid attempts at the prize, however Marcel was disqualified for using a concertina and microphone, while L.Z. was disqualified as she refused to be identified in the column.

Speaking of awards, Billings Town Council is looking for possible nominees for 'Senior of the Year!" Submit the person's name with a brief description of why you think they deserve this honour to the township at: http://billingstwp.ca/contact/

Just a reminder that the library has an ever-growing collection of board games for you to check out and enjoy at home. We take advantage of it on a regular basis. Yesterday, one half of Team Fergmeijer was out walking and spilled a bag of the Scrabble letters on the road. Local board game enthusiast Jamie Ward happened to walk by at the same time, and called out: “What’s the word on the street, yo?” Have a great week!
