May 21, 2021

Is anyone else excited about this year’s population count? Team Fergmeijer didn’t think we’d ever enjoy learning about population statistics, but then we came to our census.

A very happy birthday goes out to Casey B on Wednesday! She’s the best at dancing like nobody’s watching. But as a Zumba instructor, she’s also the best at dancing when everyone is watching! We hope you have a great day.

Due to the extension of the stay at home order, the Old Mill Heritage Centre has rescheduled the season opening to Friday June 4th. Save the date! They have an amazing new exhibit on the Empress of Ireland that you won’t want to miss! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.

How does Peter Parker keep track of the number of arachnids in any given neighbourhood? He uses his spidey census.

Nominations are open for the Township of Billings Senior of the Year! Nominations are due to the town office by Wednesday, May 26th, to be reviewed by Council at a special Council meeting on Thursday, May 27th. Send your nominations to Tiana Mills by email (tmills@billingstwp.ca) or to the Township via Facebook Messenger.

A reminder that with the provincial lockdown, the Municipal office is closed to the public. Most staff are working remotely to provide municipal services via telephone and email; however, telephone response time may be delayed. Staff email addresses are available on the town website at www.billingstwp.ca. All council meetings are being held via Zoom meeting. Contact the office (tmills@billingstwp.ca) for the link to attend.

Ever wonder how jail authorities come to a decision about counting prisoners? They need a con-census.

Completion of the parking lot near the tree maze, including green space and butterfly garden has been postponed until 2022, given the existing activity in that vicinity related to Main St. reconstruction. Check with the township website and facebook page for updates on all the projects in the community, including any closures or detours related to current road works.

4elements Living Arts invites 14-25 year olds to join Theatre Maker Lisa Hamalainen and Anishinaabe/Onkwehón:we Cultural Coordinator Shelba Deer for two weeks of creative exploration along the Kagawong River Trail! A great opportunity to connect with nature, learn about community and gain performance experience. Space is limited for this free initiative, and early registration is encouraged. Please email kagawongriverstories@4elementslivingarts.org for information and registration, or phone 705-282-0444. Deadline to apply is May 28th.

Finally, a famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official, who apologized profusely, saying, "I wasn’t myself… I must have taken Leif off my census!" Have a great week!
