May 28, 2021

With Team Fergmeijer’s obvious obsession with Japanese haikus, it was only a matter of time before we started exploring other art forms with similar roots in the country. That’s right, the art of folding paper! We’ve been following the art for some time. In fact, it was in the news just this morning: the World Origami Museum in Tokyo was vandalized last night. (We’ll keep you updated on the story as it unfolds.) Once our interest was peaked, we went online to find the World Origami Championships (talk about papercut-throat competition!). Sadly, we weren’t able to watch because it was paper view. We contacted the library and checked out a book called “How to become an expert in Origami.” It’s harder than it looks; so far, we've made nearly 1000 paper snowballs. We hired a private tutor to teach us, but they quit after the first week. Claimed it was too much paperwork. But, during lockdown we’ve had time on our hands and with our interest in-creasing by the day, we have persevered. Over the last few weeks our origami skills have improved - tenfold!

Team Fergmeijer was saddened to hear that this would be the last issue of The Manitoulin West Recorder. It was many moons ago, when we were just a pair of spring chickens (reporting on the goings-on of wild turkeys), that we were allowed to cut our journalism teeth with this column. We truly appreciate the opportunity they gave us (and the apparent lack of any oversight or quality control). Be sure to continue following our puntastic reporting of local events in The Manitoulin Expositor, beginning next week!

A very happy birthday goes out to Morgan E next week. With a half dozen adorable little ones (both 2 and 4 legged), be sure to count your blessings (and not your grey hairs).

Due to the extension of the stay at home order, the Old Mill Heritage Centre has had to once again reschedule its season opening. The Empress of Ireland exhibit will have an Honour Guard until provincial COVID-19 guidelines allow the museum to open for the season. Once open, this will be an exhibit not to be missed! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.

According to the newly issued Provincial Order, the boat launches at the Small Craft Basin and the Aus Hunt Marina, as well as the basketball court, are now open and available to be used. Please be sure to maintain physical distancing, and wear a mask where appropriate.

The Late Bloomers are hard at work sprucing up the village! Keep your eyes open as the flower boxes and gardens around town are slowly coming to life thanks to these green-thumbed volunteers.

Lastly, does anyone know how long it takes to repair a hearing aid? We sent ours off weeks ago and we have not heard anything since. Have a great week!

Is anyone else excited about this year’s population count? Team Fergmeijer didn’t think we’d ever enjoy learning about population statistics, but then we came to our census.

A very happy birthday goes out to Casey B on Wednesday! She’s the best at dancing like nobody’s watching. But as a Zumba instructor, she’s also the best at dancing when everyone is watching! We hope you have a great day.

Due to the extension of the stay at home order, the Old Mill Heritage Centre has rescheduled the season opening to Friday June 4th. Save the date! They have an amazing new exhibit on the Empress of Ireland that you won’t want to miss! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for more details.

Finally, a famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official, who apologized profusely, saying, "I wasn’t myself… I must have taken Leif off my census!" Have a great week!

Quarantine has been tough on a lot of relationships. We have a friend who just broke up with his girlfriend Loraine. She found out he was seeing another girl, Claire Lee. He perked up relatively quickly saying, “Silver lining, I can see Claire Lee now, Lorraine is gone!”

Next week (May 17-18) the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) will be flushing the water lines. If you are on the Kagawong water system and notice any discoloration in your water, leave it running until it is clear.

A very happy birthday goes out to Sherri C who turns 29 on Monday. We hope you have a wild time celebrating. Just remember, “It’s my birthday” is not a valid legal defense.

Have you ever considered that Zoom meetings are just modern day seances? “There’s someone who wants to join us.” “Angela, are you there?”  “Can you hear us?”

When we are able to travel again, Team Fergmeijer has settled on Hawaii as our first destination! Though we were wondering if they allow loud laughing there, or just a low ‘ha’?

Final thoughts for the week: Lockdown may end by May end, or may not end by May end as it may extend. But May will end by May end, even if lockdown may not end. Have a great week!

May 7, 2021

This week, we at Team Fergmeijer feel it is of momumental importance to take a mom-ent to appreciate all the mothers out there. On this mom-entous day the Team would like to formally recognize that we really hit the motherload when it comes to moms. Our moms are like no m-other. On the toughest days we still hear your voice in our heads, always telling us to do the right thing. Kind of like an internal momologue. Although between the two of us, we can’t fold a fitted sheet, we still think we turned out pretty darn well. Southern Mom and Manitoulin Mom, thank you for giving us life, and for not taking it away during our teenage years. We love you loads! Speaking of, can you do our laundry?

Kagawong residents on the Municipal Water System: Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA) will be flushing the water lines on May 17 - 18. If there is any discoloration in your water, leave it running until it is clear.
