June 26, 2024

Everyone romaine calm; it’s the very first market day of the season! It’s always so much fun to see all the vendors and the goods they have for sale. Did you hear that one of the most popular market vendors left last year mid-summer to attend mime school? We haven’t heard from him since. He always had the best root vegetables, so we hope he will turnip at the market today. For those visiting from overseas, just remember that at the market, haggling is generally frowned upon. In Canada we don’t negotiate with tourists.

Grab your reusable tote bags - it’s the day you’ve all been waiting for! Today (June 26th) is the first of the weekly Kagawong summer markets. Be sure to stop in to the largest market on the island for some great finds and support local artisans and bakers. There will be lots to explore between vendors in the covered rink, in the colourful cabanas, and in pop-up stores in the parking lot, as well as many local shops in the village.

Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy local music at the Manitoulin Choirs benefit concert last Saturday at Manitoulin Secondary. All proceeds went directly to Manitoulin Family Resources and we’re still humming our favourite tunes from the night.

It must really be summer now, because the Manitoulin Tennis Club is meeting twice a week! Come on out Sunday mornings at 10am and/or Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm, both at the Manitoulin Secondary School courts. Players of all abilities are welcome, with lessons available in the near future.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Stephanie M and Abbie N. When we were kids, birthdays were all about the cake and presents. Now, well, it’s still all about cake and presents. Here’s hoping you get lots of both!

This Saturday! The annual Anglican church yard sale and bbq will be Saturday, June 29th from 10-2pm at the pavilion. You are sure to find something (perhaps several somethings) you didn’t know you can’t live without!

During the first weekend of July, come and spin a yarn with the Jabbawong Storytelling Festival! This festival is part of the ARTINFUSION weekend (July 5-7) which includes a vendor market, a BBQ lunch on the Saturday, an exhibition of the Manitoulin Island Artists Guild, art workshops on the Sunday, and an evening with author Waubgeshig Rice on the Friday night. Check out the Jabbawong Storytelling Festival on Facebook for more information!

No sitting on your summer laurels, the very next Saturday (July 13th), join classic car enthusiasts for the Kagawong Show and Shine car show! The cars will be at Dig and Doug’s Cedar Furniture on Main Street from 10am - 3pm. There will be lots of great vehicles on display for all to admire. Then, it’s time to hit the beach that evening for the library’s annual open air movie night!

Be sure to sneak in some rest, and drink lots of water because things REALLY take off the weekend of July 20th! The Billings Library is hosting their annual book sale and a local author showcase on Saturday (11-3pm) - local authors interested in participating should reach out to the Billings Library (billingsreads@gmail.com)  to be included. Also that weekend, the Manitoulin Art Tour will spotlight a number of Billings artists in the region over the course of the entire weekend.

And don’t forget about the island-wide Household Hazardous Waste Day, also on July 20th! Not as summer-y, we know. But an important part of helping the environment by keeping hazardous things out of our community landfill. Save up your batteries, old electronics, paints, and chemicals - residents of Billings can drop off items at the Mindemoya Roads Building that Saturday from 1pm-4pm.

Given that the opening for this column was about the market, it is just so frustrating that we couldn’t think of a single synonym for it. Talk about bazaar. Have a great week!

June 19, 2024

For anyone who has not spent time in Billings during the spring and summer months, we would like to give you an idea of just how many things are happening around here. This place is busier than: an anteater at a picnic; a one-toothed man in a corn-on-the-cob eating contest; a termite in a sawmill; a cat at a laser show; a centipede in a toe counting contest; the beard of an auctioneer; a mosquito at a nudist camp. Yep, never a dull moment around here!

Tennis, anyone? The Manitoulin Tennis Club is back to meeting Sunday mornings at 10am at the Manitoulin Secondary School courts. Players of all abilities are welcome, with lessons available in the near future.

Happy birthday to a slew of off-Islanders who (we assume) wish they could be full-time Kagawongians.  Dan & Jess I, Stephanie M, Abby N are all celebrating what we think are their 29th birthdays. As they aren’t Islanders, we can’t be sure, but have decided to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Mark your calendars and start your engines! Things are picking up in Kagawong for the summer and there’s no shortage of goings-on over the next few weeks. Buckle up and get your summer on!

First up - this Saturday! Come on out for a delightful evening of music, hosted by the Island Singers and the Manitoulin Community Choir on June 22nd at 7pm. Manitoulin choirs and musicians will be performing at Manitoulin Secondary School for a pay-what-you-wish donation with all proceeds going to Manitoulin Family Resources. It will be great music for a great cause!

Next, Wednesday, June 26th is the first of the weekly Kagawong summer markets. Be sure to stop in for some great finds and support local artisans and bakers. The next day, join Manitoulin Streams at the Billings Park Centre on June 27th for the next Youth Rangers event: Salamanders of Manitoulin! Register students in grades 1-8 ($5 per child) by emailing getinvolved.manitoulinstreams@gmail.com

Close on the heels of the market is the annual Anglican church yard sale and bbq on the following Saturday (June 29th) from 10-2pm at the pavilion. You are sure to find something (perhaps several somethings) you didn’t know you can’t live without!

During the first weekend of July, come and spin a yarn with the Jabbawong Storytelling Festival, July 5th and 6th. Check out their Facebook page for more details.

Past movies have included Jaws, The Meg, Mama Mia! and The Princess Bride.

There’s even more going on in August, but at the risk of rivaling the length of the Providence Bay column, we’ll save those details for a future paper. Never let it be said there’s nothing to do in Billings. Stay tuned!

We know it's a long shot but does anyone know what a trebuchet is? Have a great week!

June 12, 2024

Took a quick flight down south and we are actually writing the column from the airport this week. It has been a bit of a crazy trip. We just got here and there’s a woman completely passed out on the luggage carousel! She’s slowly coming around now. We spent some time in South America on this trip. We Ecua-dore it there! The next stop on the trip was Cuba and we are Havana great time! One half of Team Fergmeijer decided we should jump out of a perfectly good airplane while we are here. She is definitely the more adventurous of the two of us; she tends to chute first and ask questions later. The friend we were staying with has a very different personality. She loves to travel by Zeppelin (she hasn’t figured out there are faster and easier ways to get around yet). She’s happy though. It’s true what they say: ignorance is blimps.

Thank you to Manitoulin Streams for orchestrating the planting of new native trees and shrubs along the Kagawong beach and waterfront area! These plants will provide shade to the playground area, prevent geese from coming into the playground, reduce runoff, and provide food for small bird species and pollinators. Thank you also to all the volunteers who came out to help plant!

Body Stories Dance is hosting free adult and teen Mindful Movement workshops throughout June and July at the Kagawong Park Centre! Happy 29th birthday wishes go out to Trish T, and Karlene S. We hope you both enjoy an all-nighter to celebrate (even if these days that just means sleeping through the night without getting up to pee).

It’s just around the corner! Kagawong’s summer markets run weekly on Wednesdays beginning on June 26. Be sure to stop in the village for some great finds, and support local artisans and bakers.

June 5, 2024

Team Fergmeijer has gouda news - June 4th was national cheese day! And since we are super mature, we have included these grate cheese puns that we decided were gouda-nough to make you laugh. One friend said he didn’t think cheese puns were a good idea for the column. Well, we disa-brie but concede the issue may warrant further analyswiss. However, since it’s feta to be safe than sorry, we are putting the puns in for now, but worst queso scenario, we can remove them later.

It’s never too late for spring cleaning! Manitoulin Metal - the MSS Robotics Team - is hosting an e-waste drive at the high school all this week. Bring your old televisions, computers, phones, DVD players, small appliances, audio/visual equipment, any size batteries or any other dead electronics to the high school weekdays from 3pm - 5pm and Saturday, June 8 from 10am - 2pm. Not everyone appreciates living in a rural community like Kagawong and the greater Billings area. Yours truly, however find the sheer podunkity (podunkitude? podunkery?) of living here is one of its greatest appeals. Have a great week!
