June 22, 2018

Happy Solstice! Just 7 more days until the kids are free for summer vacation! For those who, like us, love a countdown, there’s also just 108 days until Thanksgiving, 131 days until Hallowe’en, and only 186 days until Christmas!

Team Fergmeijer spent a good 90 minutes testing out the new playground equipment at the main beach this week. It was all about quality control of course, but the crowd of 6 year olds waiting for their turn really seemed to lack appreciation for our efforts.

Have you got a great idea for a name for the former St. Paul’s on the Hill as it is reimagined into an entertainment centre? Drop a note to the town office. Don’t forget, we’ve already suggested Churchy McChurchface. With this new multi-purpose venue available, we expect to see an augmented number of sharp musicians coming to town!

You can’t call us a lyre when we tell you we have had to scale back our puns in the last few columns. We believe it’s our forte, but over-use of puns seems to get us into treble with some of our faithful readers who tend to send us notes telling us we are out of tune with the modern reader. We love to reed our fan mail, but some of you do tend to harp on about our love of puns.  It’s a bit insulting - we don’t write to you telling you how to conduct your business. Team Fergmeijer has been doing this for a while now, and we feel like we have managed to guitar act together at this point. Whew! This has become a bit of a rant. Apologies, we didn’t mean to harmony one’s feelings. Here’s hoping these jokes don’t fall flat this week.

Manitoulin Tennis Club is pausing for a few weeks while the courts at MSS get repainted.

What does a thesaurus eat for breakfast? A synonym roll! Speaking of books…  Billings Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year! The library will be sprucing up the joint with some new furnishings and art in the building. On July 11th, at the annual book and bake sale, buy your lunch and get a free slice of anniversary cake! And keep your eyes open over the next several weeks for the new ‘branch’ of the library that will be opening.

Manitoulin Family Resources now presents Early Learning playgroups throughout the year at the Park Centre! Families with children aged 0-6 are invited to stop in June 25, July 9, July 23, August 6 and August 20, from 9am-11:30am, for songs, stories, snacks, and learning through play. Contact 368-3400, ext. 1, for more information.

July is just around the corner and so many fun things are on the horizon. The first week of July, wash off the spring mud at the Rec Committee’s annual car wash, and then show off your shine at the Anglican church yard sale and barbeque. July 20th and 21st make sure to clear your schedule, because Summerfest will keep the whole family hoppin’. Friday night, watch a movie on the beach (or in the water) on a huge 200” screen! Saturday, take part in all the amazing activities around town and then take in some music with Flathead Ford when they rock the dock.

Have a great week!
