March 24, 2017

We’ve had news of a celebrity sighting in the area! Rumour has it that actor/singer Will Smith is hiking on the Island this week! He is keeping a low profile so if you want to find him you’ll have to look for the fresh prints in the snow.

Tonight! Join the Billings Recreation Committee as they host Marcel Beneteau and Sabine Huege on an armchair voyage to Australia! Discover the landscapes, ocean views and wildlife of Australia and Tasmania without spending 24 hours on a plane. The evening includes a fascinating slideshow presentation and a ‘dessert social.’ The event starts at 7pm at the Park Centre; admission is by cash or non-perishable food donation (all donations go to the local food bank).

The Sandhill sound-off hasn’t been heard yet, but we have two possible sightings. Sandy and Ted K. write that they “are almost 100% sure” they saw a crane flying last week. Willa W. has also reported seeing what looked like a Sandhill. Team Fergmeijer has not instituted a scale of certainty for the contest, so we will reserve judgement until we have a fully confident report of a sighting (or sounding).

Sandhills aren’t the only birds flocking north this month. You can look for the elusive Snow Birds to start migrating back to the Island over the next few weeks, too.

The Fibre Arts Festival has their first event coming up on April 23rd: a mixed media paint social. Check out the Daffodil Fibre Arts Festival Facebook page for more details.
Next library movie night will be April 1st - no joke! The fun family movie Monster Trucks will be on the big screen; show starts at 7pm with free admission as always. Check out the Facebook page for more information and trailers.

Take note! Hydro One has a power outage planned for April 2nd - 7:30am-11:30am. Stock the wood stove and fill some buckets with water to get through the morning. Or do what we intend to do, just pull the covers up and sleep until the outage is over.

Don’t forget, Mimi O’Bonsawin is returning to Kagawong as she launches her new album “Connected.” Contact Pat Hess to get your tickets for the April 1st show at the Park Centre.

Happy belated birthday to Patrick McColman who turned 29 last week, just before St. Patrick’s Day.
Convenient timing for celebrating, if you ask us. Fellow journalist and proud Kagawongian Sharon J also celebrated the big 2-9 this week. Honourary local Tahnee will, shockingly enough, be 29 years old tomorrow. Many happy returns to you all!

Random thought for the day: Do you suppose that when cheetahs race and one cheats, the other one is like, “You are such a cheetah!” And then they laugh and laugh, and eat a zebra or whatever.
